Rationale for the use of Kerraboot
Treatment of leg and foot ulcers is complex and often depends on the underlying cause of the ulceration. A huge variety of dressings and other medications are available for use with few having proven advantages over the others, which often results in prescribing confusion. In fact, many dressings hold exudate against the wound, allowing inhibitory proteins to slow down the formation of new granulation tissue and thus inhibit healing. Therefore, despite the vast range of treatments there is still a large unmet need for effective treatment options in this
therapeutic area.

Kerraboot is a unique dressing device, available through UK hospitals since November 2003 and listed on the Drug Tariff since 2004, for the management of foot and leg ulcers. Kerraboot’s design is firmly based on the sound principles of moist wound healing and addresses the limitations of current treatments. Its unique dual-action ensures that exudate is removed from the wound whilst a warm moist environment is maintained to facilitate healing. Kerraboot rationalises prescribing choice in ulcer management, as there is no need for other dressings.

The aims of Kerraboot are to remove the barriers to healing and aid patients by making dressing changes more comfortable and by reducing odour. In addition, Kerraboot aids nurses both in hospital and in the community by reducing time spent on dressings and by simplifying treatment choice (4).
