Information
In 1962, George Winter published his landmark study in which he demonstrated that
wounds healed faster with occlusive dressings than by air drying (1).
A warm moist environment is necessary to encourage regranulation of epithelial
tissue and local production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Occlusive
dressings are designed to create a moist micro-environment that promotes wound
healing. However, unless these dressings are able to remove exudate from the wound,
they may contribute to inhibiting healing in chronic wounds.
