Overview of moist wound healing (MWH)

In 1962, George Winter published his landmark study in which he demonstrated that wounds healed faster with occlusive dressings than by air drying (1). A warm moist environment is necessary to encourage regranulation of epithelial tissue and local production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Occlusive dressings are designed to create a moist micro-environment that promotes wound healing. However, unless these dressings are able to remove exudate from the wound, they may contribute to inhibiting healing in chronic wounds.

The benefits of a moist environment for
wound healing are (2):

Less intense inflammation
Less prolonged inflammation
More rapid keratinocyte proliferation and migration
Earlier differentiation of keratinocytes to restore cutaneous barrier function
Increased fibroblast proliferation
Increased collagen synthesis
Earlier less prolonged angiogenesis
Earlier full-thickness wound contraction
